Sometimes things go wrong and sometimes they go well. The previous day, we had faced a headwind, but this time the weather was on our side. That gave us renewed energy for another day on the bike. Carefully, we made our way out of Ghent along well-maintained cycle paths and quiet streets.

Before long, we reached the Bruges Canal. We felt completely at ease along this perfectly straight waterway, cycling without a care on the wide, traffic free towpath. About halfway between Ghent and Bruges, we passed through a picturesque residential area filled with towering trees. It set the children dreaming about the future and how they might like to live one day.

We soon left the houses behind and returned to the forest. The route first led us through the Vagevuur woods and then through the provincial domain of Bulskampveld. In the shade of Bulskamp Castle, we stopped to enjoy our picnic.

With our energy restored, we continued on our way. We first made a short detour towards Damme, before cycling into Bruges via the charming Minnewater Park, a beautiful introduction to the city’s romantic atmosphere.

Once again, we arrived in comfort. Hostel Europa proved to be a welcoming place set within lovely grounds. We settled into a shared room, then had a shower, got ready and headed into the city.
