Heritage comes in all shapes and sizes. Yesterday we got acquainted with the historic buildings in the centre of Leuven. When we left this beautiful city again, we admired the old industrial buildings lining the canal. It was a pleasant start to a new cycling day that would take us to Antwerp.

The morning was still pleasantly fresh, while pale sun promised good weather ahead. Following a perfectly straight canal, we eventually reached the winding River Dijle. The views across the surrounding fields were impressive, and the unspoilt nature formed a constant theme throughout the day. The Mechels Broek, with its expanses of water and abundance of birdlife, was a place of peace and openness.

Passing through this nature reserve, we arrived in Mechelen, where a stop felt inevitable. We dismounted, wandered through the centre and enjoyed the Saturday market. It's warm and authentic atmosphere provided a pleasant break. Afterwards, we continued our journey. The River Nete guided us to Lier, from where we made our way onwards to Antwerp.

We approached the baroque city through an attractive setting, cycling past pleasant residential areas in Mortsel and several parks. However, we soon had to persevere as the weather turned. It became darker, wetter and colder, and a headwind slowed down our progress. We had already been looking forward to reaching the youth hostel, and that anticipation only grew stronger.

As we cycled into Antwerp, we had to stay alert for a moment. Navigating the narrow streets, we found our way to youth hostel Pulcinella, a modern and welcoming place close to the centre. We received a warm welcome on arrival, and our bikes were safely stored in the secure bicycle storage area. In the comfortable bar, we noticed British rugby fans enjoying themselves together. We chose a familiar routine: a few board games followed by a good night's sleep.
